Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Pigpen "SS"

I know this should get some obvious folks to reply but:

What was the deal with Pigpen and the big metal "SS" button he prominently displayed in the early days?

I have heard some theories. Never anything written about it that I know of.

I guess by obvious repliers that might include me.

In the day, Pig wore either a leather or a denim vest (he had both) which he decorated with all sorts of buttons and pins. His denim vest was courtesy of the local Hell's Angels. I have no doubt that the SS stood for many things--like whatever you wanted it to. But Pig was no Hell's Angel--he was a real sweetheart. Google some early Pig pics and you will see a variety of stuff pinned on his vests.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: correction:

A little research indicates the the SS does reperesent the Nazi party.

I quote:

An Outlaw's tattoos can reflect other membership information as well. An Outlaw who commits murder, attempts murder, or explodes a bomb on behalf of the Outlaws is entitled to wear "lightning bolts," a Nazi-style "SS" tattoo. An Outlaw who has spent time in jail may receive an "LL" tattoo, which stands for "Lounge Lizard."

Still, Pig weren't no Nazi. He like to portray he tough attitude as a drinker and a hardass as part of his persona.

I met Ron several times and can vouch that he never pulled any trains, pissed on anyone, or terrorized your grandmother. He did once threaten a P.A. guy at SUNY that he would rip off his head an shit in it. You can hear the others chuckle. Ruff tuff creampuff.
